Ethnicity Challenge
What ethnicity do you think the One Piece characters have?
Eichiro Oda has a wide range of characters, and each character has very distinct features, outfits, and personalities. So we thought, why not match up these people’s looks to real countries around the world! So, here are our match-ups. Scroll down below and Contact us for your own submissions _ (repeats are allowed). NOTE: This is not supposed to be offensive, so we apologize if it is, just for fun _. Obviously everything here is based on STEREOTYPES. So, please excuse us and all the people who comment for that, every person from each ethnicity is different. You can always put your own opinions on the same characters ^_~.
Alvida
Alvida is from AMERICA. She seems like a cowboy-wannabe with her hat, and since as some people said, she got “liposuction” she must be American. Her greed also points to the same thing lol…
Arlong
Arlong must be from JAMAICA. Why? He wears cool shorts, an open shirt and seems to love the water, hence he must be an islander. Jamaica is a fun place where there is a lot of partying but also a place where nobody can truely control (trafficking etc.) so there you go Arlong :P!
Buggy
Buggy is from RUSSIA. Why? Because he is a clown, and the Russian circus is quite famous and so Buggy must be Russian. His very weird abilities make him more famous, and since he seems to surround himself with very talented people and cool lion he must be Russian lol.
Chopper
Chopper is from CANADA. Canada has some nice cold places, and many small towns. Seeing his history, Chopper living in a weather climate like that, he can live in Canada. Antartica has different fauna, so that’s not possible. But in Canada he would fit right in. Imagine him saying ‘aye’ :P.
Crocodile
Crocodile must be from KUWAIT. Crocodile has arab features, and in Kuwait they have darker skin color (been there) and since he seems to have a lot of pride and power, he reminds me of the King there.
Eneru
Eneru is from TIBET. Although he’s extremely white, he seems like a Buddha almost, and his long ears remind me of some of the old statues found in Tibet. Tibet is also a place in war (apart of China) and since it’s quite unstable there, Eneru seems to be the perfect candidate.
Luffy
Luffy is from BORACAY. He’s obviously an islander and since he seems more outgoing and free, telling the political situation there, he must be from Bohemia lol. He also has a round face and is very tanned, his hat makes him seem a bit poor…
Mihawk
Mihawk must be from SPAIN. He looks very Latino, and his outfit reminds me of those high class people from Spain. However, unlike Zoro he seems more reserved, and his cross shape on the Sword seems to be pointing to religion, so since Spain is Catholic— he must be Spanish.
Nami Nami must be from SCOTLAND. Why? Because of her red hair. She also seems to be really outgoing and fun, so since Scottish people seem to love to have fun drinking, dancing, having fun :D She must be Scottish!
Robin
Robin is from EGYPT. She has dark features, and her nose really matches a Egyptian. Does she not remind you of those women in the those old Papyrus drawings. She also is an archeologist, and what other place can she be in than Egypt (with one of the oldest cultural hearths).
Sanji
Sanji is from the USA. He reminds me of Brad-Pitt lol. His suit, attitude, love of women, and addiction to the cigerette all point to being American. Some may say he’s British because of etiquette with women but hey, aren’t all men like that in front of women :P. Sanji is quite outgoing and very picky about his looks (sorta like a Hollywood Star)
Usopp
Usopp must be FRENCH. Look at him, his hair is curly and black, his nose long and pretty much if you put a flower and a cigerette in his mouth you can imagine him over a French Cafe attracting the women ;).
Vivi
Vivi is from GREECE. Her blue hair and figure reminds me of a greek woman in Athens lol (esp. in that princess dress of hers). She sorta reminds me of Aphrodite since Aphrodite is the goddess of love and really doesn’t do anything else but that >_< (hates Vivi).
Zoro
Zoro must be from MEXICO. His skin color points to non-caucasian origins, and his looks point to latin origins. He’s not that religious so he can’t be from the strict catholic/european places such as Portugal and Spain (historical wise) hence he must be Mexican. His green hair and bandana fit the part, and obviously his name has some meaning to a legendary hero…

usopp- usopp’s too dark to be french and he has cultured hair kind of like a black person, i think he’s carribean, epsecially since it looked like he live very near to water.
Captain Kuro is from England. you can tell because of his hair and glasses.also because the way he talks and his suit.
oro should be from germany with the black and greeen clothes. also his attitude is like a german.
CHOPPER: I think Chopper is from Lapland. It’s very cold there, and they have reindeer. Also, the houses on Drum Island made me think of reindeer.
USOPP: I think Usopp would be from Portugal or Spain. He’s olive-skinned with dark thick hair. Also, there is a scan in which he is brushing his teeth, and his water mug has a Portuguese word on it.
NAMI: Nami just screams “California” to me.
I would have to say that Usopp hails from some where in Eastern Europe (primarily the Jewish counties). In that part of Europe the appearance tends to be olive skin and dark curly hair. He reminds me of the guys who go to my temple. And not to knock my own religion but if Usopp was Jewish … that would explain the nose o_O
Zoro, I have to agree, I think he’s got some Latin blood in him.
Sanji, I dunno, I’d say England but the dub voice reminds me of New York.
Well… Sanji has to be french. He looks and kinda sounds french. His suit and eyebrow match with that too. Also, his attacks are named in french!
Zoro- I think he is mixed… Latin and Germany. People bring up good points with both. But if her were either, it’d be German.
Luffy: He’s Japanese. He reminds me perfectly of someone Japanese all around.
Nami: I can’t say… I guess Ireland though actually for some reason…
Sanji: French. It’s the woman and cooking thing. But he might have American in him!
Vivi: Agreed. Greece. ((I love Vivi O.O))
Usopp: Yeah, he’s mid Euro or Carribean. I thought skin and hair remind me of a Black person, but I have straight hair so can’t keep it to that.
Chopper: I don’t know too much about cold countries… but why not the North Pole? (Yes, I’m making a pun…)
Mihawk: This guy is from Spain. The clothes and sword say that, and his accent. At first I guessed he was French, but his face and accent say otherwise (the accent I heard in the dub at least).
Shanks: I wanna know here he comes from. He’s a hard one to guess. But I would say French for the heck of it. The skin tone, his carefree nature. The hair color… maybe Arcadian is more like it. Perhaps Cajun or Creole!<3
Shanks is from Australia. He has red hair and he talks Australian.
Heh I’m reading what you said about how what countries the chracters might seem like their from and I was thinking before I read it compeltely “Hey Usopp seems like he would be from France. He is always running away when a fight breaks out.” ..... Ya know like the real France. waits for laughter
ok Sanji is like so a guy from boston but his origin is from FRANCE!! and i don’t know where Zoro is from but he could be more like from canada with some othas mixed in. Mihawk is very italian. luffy is from japan but es funny and stpid so i dont kno how that fits in with tha japanese thing. usopp is NOT french no matter what. nami is scottish because of her crazy laugh. i don’t know about nico robin (she’s not in tha series for us yet). chopper is from like a place with reindeers that have blue noses and can talk …telepathically… kiddin’!!!!!
Luffy – It’s not really well known, but Luffy is actually a normal human, HE HAS NO ETHNICITY! Oda got Luffy’s character design from a recurring background character Akira Toriyama would draw in Dragonball and Dragonball Z.
Nami – Nami screams Irish to me
Zoro – Zoro is a mix between Japanese and Spanish, Roranora Zorro was a famous Spanish pirate from which Oda got Zoro’s name and Zorro is using the most Japanese fighting style in the whole manga!
Usopp – His cowardice, his lies, his enginuity with devices, unfortunately, I would say he is most likely the American >.< (especially since when Japanese think black people, they think America before Africa)
Sanji – He’s french, and it’s incredibly obvious
Chopper – Would definitely have to say Canadian…I guess _;
Robin is totally Egyptian XD
ok first things first. Everyone in one piece is japanese. There. But! I do see what’s going on. Shanks is British. Songi is italian. You can tell by his accent. trust me. I act like a mobster to make my sisters laugh and the way he says things like “I learned him some ettiquote” (did i spell that right?) yes, he says that to patty after beating up Lt. Fullbody. (read comics) it’s about the dumbest thing songi ever says but he’s cute all the same. Wapol is russian but buggy isn’t. He is very japanese. So is Zolo (Zoro). Yes he has Zoro for a name but that is wrong at the same time. His name IS ‘Zolo’ but japanese have no ‘r’ in thier alphabet and use ‘L’ instead. but only in spelling. it is pronounced ‘Zolo’ (i’m a nerd) I want to live in japan so i practice this kinda stuff. I’m also what i like to think is the ultimate one piece fan. but i’m sure there is someone out there with the money to actually buy the one piece stuff i want. cries
I think that Sanji is a lot frensh. Because he likes cooking, he likes every women he see ; ) and he is that kind of guy who would say that snails and frog’s legs is delicious. (gross!!!)
Luffy is taking my dream! I loved pirates before i saw one piece and fell in love with luffy- i mean, started watching the show for kicks and started getting obsessed with it. I also wish Shanks were my dad.

Really though; I do like this idea. It’s fun!
Sanji: He’s gotta be from America. How else would he get the brooklynn accent? (I’m talkin the American version). His blonde hair just screams HOLLYWOOD! He is nicely dressed and has a love for women, food, and wine; so it sounds french. (In France, they eat alot of food, but they eat a little of each; just to taste it.) If I were to pick anywhere he’d be from it would be French. Besides, his attacks are French. (Note: Sanji loves women, but some don’t care for him. This reminds me of America, because the women tease like that…)
Zoro: He’s gotta be everything in the world. I mean, his swords and bandanna sound and look spanish; his look and attitude is german; his appetite is French; and his obsessive weight-lifting sounds American. I gotts say, though; he doesn’t seeme American at all. He doesn’t look French, or look Spanish. I don’t know; the green screams German. He’s mostly strict, anyway, but sometimes he just has to laugh. He also cares for his friends. I have to say he must be German.
Chopper: Alaska. Simple as that. Drum Island reminds me alot of Alaska, for some reason. (My friend sent me back photos) I think they have reindeer…but think about it. He can’t be from Canada, since they are mostly French and such. He doesn’t look French or anything. He’s very carefree, which adds to the Alaskan Eskimo thing. Dr. Hiriluk even looked Alaskan with his hairdo fro some reason…:P
Luffy: Japanese. Oh yeah, he’s Japanese. His attitude and personality just yell it out to my brain. And besides,like someone stated earlier, Eiichiro Oda would have to make the hero Japanese. No question about it. (I mean, some people say he looks like a rice farmer. There are rice farmers in Japan, too!)
Nami: Gotta be Irish that was born in Califronia. I mean, what’s with all the bikinis? And her big, brown eyes and lust for treasure reminds me of California or Florida. Gotta be Irish-American.
Vivi: No question about it. She’s gotta be Russian. Her love for her country makes her seem Russian, and her hair for some reason reminds me of a Russian lady. Her personality around her pals seems American, though. But she’s not strict enough or mean enough to be from Russia, So she must have Russian roots.
Robin: I can’t say she is everything but Old Egyptian. Look at her nose! And her eyes? Come on! Egyptain, baby! =D
Ace/Trace: (Luffy’s older brother, if you haven’t caught up with the latest American episodes) No one can deny it. He’s American. His pride of himself and his hunger make him American, and so does his arrogance! (For heaven’s sakes, he wipes his mouth on a lady’s skirt. Weir, but awesome!) He’s never wearing a shirt, he likes his tattoo, has freckles, loves his little brother, and will attempt to cheat a dinner out of anyone. If he weren’t American, he’d be Japanese. I don’t know why. He’s Luffy’s brother, I guess, and Lufy seems Japanese…

Nami is soo from California! The bikinis, the money, and the tangerines just say it all. Zoro is Japanese-American.. i think the sash is obvious. Sanji is a French guy who moved to Brooklyn. The fact he likes women and cooking make him French, and his accent in the dub make him from Brooklyn.
I so wish you guys would stop saying Zolo (or Zoro or what ever you ppl call him) is MEXICAN! HE IS NOT! He is obviously an American who grew up Japan hence the sword fighting classes when he was a little kid. Oh! And agree with who ever said Nami was from Cali! I so agree I was born there and she looks like a surfer chick! Ok PeAcE oUt!
P.S- just thought i tell you guys that i think Zoro is so HOT! I mean dont you just want to run away with him! Ok now im done.
Luffy: He seems like he is from Japan, but he just doesn’t look like he’s from Japan. I mean, his skin is tanned and such.

Sanji: This is a hard one…either France or Canada. Why Cananda? Becasue Canadians are very polite and nice. But he does have that American look (and english voice!)

Shanks: Austraila or Britin. In the english version he has a cockney british accent.
That everyone is from Japan. They have mordern features from the other parts of the world, but deep at heart they are Japanese. They have been sense they were created, plus, One Piece takes place in older times, so therefore most of these contries were not on the world map yet.
Luffy’s not from Borocay, he’s from obviously from Belize. His features (short, dark hair and very round face especially) point to him being Mayan. Being someone who’s visited the country before, I’d say his taste in food has something to do with it. Also, Sanji reminds me of a Spaniard because of his romantic side, and the fact that he’s a bit of a wine conasuir!
Alvida is italian. Smoker is russian. and panda man is from tibet.

Anywho, Mihawk and Robin, those origins really do seem to fit perfectly :D Though with Nami and Zoro, I kinda picture Nami as more of an Irish girl. They have a LOT more alcohol tolerance anyways (trust me, I’m Irish) And with Zoro, hmm… I really think he’d be more of a Native American :D The hair and bandana fit even better with it. :D True the name follows that of Zorro, but I think that’s just because Oda thinks swordsmen are awesome (and he’s right XP) Also, mexicans are crazy XD They aren’t calm and collected. (or at least not the ones I know anyways) Anywho. Other than those 2, I think your list hits ‘em on the dot ;)
Sanji is most likely to be French. All his moves in the japanese version are French words for certain ways of cooking, peeling vegetables and different cuts of meat. His polite manner, womanizing ways and smoking habit just scream French. Robin is most likely from Spain, in the japanese version of One Piece all her attack names are spanish word for flower and the spanish word for the number of arms she uses in the attack.
Luffy and Portgaz are japanese, there is no doubt bout that. Sanji is french of course, and everyone knows why! LOL Zoro, well I dunno, but he is more mexican that german, I mean, he is not white, he sleeps a lot and likes to drink beer, like mexican people. he also has the careless nature that mexican people has and he is always in financial debt with nami:P Nami has to be American or Australian. Chopper is from canada. Mr. 0 is Italian, he looks like a gangster. and ussop is probably from eastern europe. Shanks is probably Irish, cuz he luvs to drink a lot and have red hair.

Luffy is fushian(from fusha village), Nami is kokoyashist (from kokoyashi village), Usopp is syrupese(from syrup village), Robin is oharan(from ohara), Chopper is drumese(from drum kingdom), Sanji is north-bluist(from north blue, don’t know exactly…..),and ZORO......he’s from Zorocountry, a country for zoro-lovers.

well i also agree that Luffy is from the Philippines, my home town. Of course, straw hats like the one he is wearing looks a lot like the hats worn by the farmers here. The outfits suites the farmers also, thus wearing a simple outfit, red chaleco, short/ 3/4 pants and sandals, of which we call them tsinelas.

Usopp: This ones a bit tougher, but by mixing his looks and personality, he?s Japanese-American. He?s got the Japanese talent for inventing odd and mostly useless stuff with the occasional useful weapon or sumthin.
Sanji: French. Cook, ladies man, smoker, curly eyebrows! Not to mention the fact that all his cooking and fighting techniques are all French?
Chopper: Someplace cold with reindeer. No clue where that could be?

Blueno (Bruno?): Mongolian? Kinda reminded me of the bad guy in Mulan?
Kalifa: Russian. Kinda reminds me of what I heard about the red light district and all?
Jyabura: Chinese.. I mean, look at his fumanchu beard!
Kumadori: Japanese quite obviously. He?s like a something out of the Kabuki plays gone wrong?
Fukurou: I?d love to hear what you guys think of this guy!
Luffy: i think he’s japanese-dutch (look at his village, it has windmills, like in netherland, and the name “D” just like names of dutch which uses “de”), and he looks japanese.
Zoro: he’s an japanese-spanish (his name’s from spain but his style’s from japan), and about his name…...it’s “ZORO”, because his b’day is on November 11, which called “Zorome” by japanese (i think that “Zoro” is an explicit of “Zorome”).
Sanji: ......french…..i heard french has many hair in their body, like sanji who has hair on his feet(sorry french, if i’m wrong of saying it…...), and his moves are using french and french are good at cooking. maybe he was adopted by japanese, that’s why his name is in japanese.
Nami: wherever is fine…....

Chopper: he’s a reindeer (who ate ‘human’ fruit), i think he’s from a zoo or maybe he was santa claus’ pet(?)
Robin: egyptian-french, she looks like an egyptian but her name is french, isn’t it?
Zoro has to be at least half black or spanish. Yes, I said black!

hair is a bit UK.
Yeah, Zoro probably is from the northern euorpe. His attitude
and all that.
Luffy probably is an asian islander, like japan cuz his length.
Smoker is also from norhern europe, cuz he smokes, he is big and
white, and behaves like northeners, not like american ot southern
euorpe.
Chopper, from northen seden or Finland, the climate, we got
raindeers and so on.
Sanji is frensh, his behaivior to girls, he sues frneh word for
attacking and so on. And he is well dressed and cookes good food

both shaped like crosses and the way his eyes are remind me of

oi! Zoro Mexican? You can’t be serious? Zoro’s name is definitely from Zorro the Mexican hero. But, Zoro is definitely not Mexican, he is a damn Japanese! The place he grew up from, his Katanas, his discipline and everything else point Zoro to being a Green Haired Japanese Samurai Bounty Hunter turned Pirate. For Luffy… Boracay Philippines? Oh wait another thing, I think you should add more quotes. Quotes like the Mr. Hiluluk’s speech about death and other inspiring quotes.

I guess Zoro’s attitude reminds me of a black guy sometimes…I dunno why…(I should know why, if I’m making this statement) but its like…haughty and sometimes “hard” like he can be stoic sometimes…and I tend to see that in the (I should be more politically correct) african american men around me. shrug sometimes he reminds me of my dad! Usopp- That guy is ugly as hell. How can you even compare him to any one? if any thing he looks like a anime version of a joke pinnochio. or Cyrus from the warriors.
Nami- She has a big head. she can fit a cali profile. or from mars or something.
Toni Toni Chopper- He could pass for a project in area 51.
Nico Robin- she looks egyptian, and she has a nice rack…her nose is big…
Vivi- Looks like…i have no idea what she looks like, honestly i dont like her. hope shed die. she has nice breast tho.
Sanji- Looks like leonardo decaprio..he could be american, just the two diffrent dubs give diffrent ideas due to the voices.
Shanks- Is badass!! hes from somewhere in europe. maybe australian, but he hasnt said mate yet.
Trace(Ace)-Is just a upgraded verson of luffy. he just has more money thats all.
Smoker(Chaser)- he could be a russian….He smokes alot like russians do, He wears that coat like hes always in the cold like russians, He always wants to lock people up with out fair trial(In English Dub idk about jap).
Mihawk- Spain, all the way. The feathered hat, his coat and open chest, Mustashe, Beard, His little knife and huge cross sword gives it away.
Luffy is totally American.
Zolo is definitly from Spain because of his clothes.
Nami is Irish because of her hair and her drinking problems.
Smoker is russian, i agree.

Luffy from Boracay made me chuckle. And to think Boracay isn’t even a country.
Really think he is a Rastafarian too. That is if fights doesn’t come looking for him.
Come to think of it all of the characters may have even came the Philippines. If you know this country you might be surprised by the mixed breeds of Eurasians as well as Asian mixes fitting the characters physique. Clothes and all too, you could buy stuff like them from Divisoria’s Filipino Chinese merchants as well from bazaars from Baguio which imports used clothes from all over the world at the cheapest.
Luffy from Boracay made me really laugh though.
I believe they all have SOME Japanese in them(duh) but let’s see my opinions:::
Luffy—Well, let’s see…I think he might be from the Carribean. He has tanned skin, with black hair, and totally hot! X3
Zoro—He could be German, or Spanish/Mexican, they seem to be both good reasons…since he drinks. But his name was inspired by a French guy, so…
Nami—Irish/Scottish, and a little American. She likes money, fun, and can really drink.
Usopp—He’s Italian. It’s a little obvious; he likes art, and has olive skin and black hair.
Sanji—He’s totally French, it fits so well! A cook, womanizer, and knows his fashion? The cigarettes too!
Chopper—Up in Canada or Alaska. It’s cold, and they have reindeer. It’s where the Ice Sheet is!
Robin—She might be French…but she’s more Egyptian with her features, and the fact she’s an Archeologist seems to help.
Franky—He’s American. More specifically: Coastal. I mean, he walks around in a Speedo!
Fukurou—American, he’s kinda like a huge Ziploc bag.
Mihawk—Totally Latino/Spanish. The sword, the clothes, the mustache…the mustache gives it away!
Shanks—Irish or Australian. He likes drinking, and for some reason he reminds me of an Australian…I can imagine him saying “G’day, mate”.
Ben Beckman—British. No idea why.
Lucky Roux—His name’s French, but he eats like an American…
Yassop—Same as Usopp. He just happens to have blonde dreadlocks.
Rockstar—He reminds me of Jimi Hendrix. And I guess where ever Hendrix is from, too.
Rob Lucci—Italian, maybe. Or Egyptian.
Kaku—I think he’s American, more specifically from San Diego, California. He likes giraffes, and he has a baseball cap.
Jyabura—Being a wolf, he reminds me of a Native American. But with the garden and chicken alarm clock, Japanese. Could be both.
Kalifa—Austria or Slovakia. Either that or somewhere in Europe where it’s cold.
Nero—He just happened to pop out of the Southern American cowboy days.
Spandam—German to French. Has something to do with that mask…
Blueno—Italian or African. He loves baseball, so maybe American.
Kumadori—A loud, funny, Japanese person…as if there is one? RESEARCH!
Wanze—Beats me, but Russian…? THINK NEAR EUROPE!
Captain Smoker—Totally Russian. I agree.
Buggy—Hmm…Russia has a point, but he likes flashy, so maybe French or American.
Ace—He’s an older version of Luffy, only not as tan. But he’s still hot! X3
PS. His name is ZORO, not ZOLO, because the Japanese language does NOT have L, and is instead pronounced ZORO. He is named after a French pirate, stated by Oda. But either his name was translated as “Zolo” OR the manga company didn’t want to get sued by Disney after Antonio Banderas’ part.

Vivi—I think she’s from Wales. She reminds me alot of Princess Diana, caring for her country and everything. She could be from Russia, BUT Arabasta is based around Arab and Egyptian ideas. So it could be either.

I’d back you up on Zoro being Mexican. The drawing style makes actual ethicity hard to tell, but his name is one r shy of ‘fox,’ and I’d say it was inspired by the mexican/californian comic book hero.

Sanji- Sanji has to be french. Look at his eyebrow, that is a very french eyebrow. Also the french are known for cooking smoking womanizing and nice clothes. Sanji is all the good things of the french in a single package. He is the ultimate frenchman without the cowardice and the retreating.
